"Acquiring Network Address"Whenever XP2 goes comes out of standby, or the cable modem is shut down, I
get a message on the tray after turning everything back on that it is 'acquiring network address.' EVEN THOUGH THE INTERNET IS UP AND RUNNING! How can I get rid of this annoyance, besides rebooting or going into the Network WINS setting? Thanks, Oreally While your computer is in Standby, or when your cable modem is shutdown,
your ISP will eventually take back your IP address, so when you come out of Standby or your cable modem regains connectivity, you need to get a new IP address from your ISP. unchecked the notify options in Network properties and have customized the local area connection on the taskbar to 'always hide,' but the 'acquiring network address icon will show up anyway. I am not on a network....just one computer. Sure like to permanently disable this notice. Any way to do so? you.....etc' and you set the customization options on the taskbar to 'always hide' one would expect not to see the icon. How can you say this is not a Windows issue if these settings don't work for local area connection...which always defaults to 'hide when inactive'? This not a solution unless you want to share your Connection. Bear in mind if you have Wireless and you are connecting without an encryption method, anyone with wireless can use your wireless network to connect and use your IP to commit whatever they want. It may have been another service that I enabled: "Network Location Awareness" that made the difference. Now I come out of stanby and the icon shows up for a few seconds then disappears! I check Network card and it shows it as connected! period of time. Upon the expiration of the lease, your ISP assigns you a new IP address. That's how ISPs manage their IP addresses. In fact, that's how virtually all networks manage their IP addresses. (The internet is a network.) If you want to learn why and how ISPs manage their IP addresses, either ask your ISP or do a web search. Apparently, there are window settings that will stop the 'acquiring network
address' icon from appearing on the tray...and actually acquire that address, as well and show the network card as connected and firewalled. After fumbling around for a while I got that setting right. I believe it was through the services that I enabled mentioned in an earlier post. Also, try going into the Wins setting in the advanced tab in Internet Protocols and uncheck the default for Net Bios and then check 'enable.' I have a very similar problem with my laptop running Windows XP pro SP3 and
my home wireless network. When I do a full boot I'm connected to the internet and it says i'm connected. If come out of Hibernate however, I'm connected to the internet, can surf the web, but it says "Acquiring Network Address" continually and will not say connected no matter how long i wait for it. I haven't found a permanent fix for this issue yet and am still looking. In the mean time i've found a little trick that, if you are in my situation, will change your sys tray icon from acquiring to connected. Double click on the wireless icon in your system tray, Click Properties, Choose the "Wireless Networks" tab, Select your network from the list and click Properties, Look near the top of the first tab for a checkbox called "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting", If it is checked, uncheck it. If it is unchecked then check it. Then click ok twice and voila, your status should now be connected. If you want to go back and reset the checkbox to its original value you can, but so far, i havent needed to bother. If anyone finds a lasting solution please post it. find you can correct it by right-clicking and selecting "Repair". (I haven't tried "Disable" then "Enable", but that might work too.) HTH Tony.
