Changing Default Openings

Here's the customization sought:

Let's say I go to a shortcut icon and rt-click properties / change icon. I
choose browse, and XP opens up Windows Explorer 'Look In.' In this case it
is lookng in some system drive with icons. I want it to look in my ICONS
folder and I'd like it to default to 'all files' as well. How can I set this
up to open to this folder and file type every time I go to 'browse' for a
new icon?

Thanks,

Oreally

IME at least, XP PRo SP3, if I just switch to the folder where I put my
own ICONS, that's where it'll go the next time I open that.  If I want
to go back and get the icons from within the installed programs, then I
have to relocate that on my own because it's remembering which folder I
used last.
Something tells me I misunderstand your question; I'd think you
already discovered that if you're changed ICONs around, so ... .

The other possibility is to put YOUR icons into the same default folder
the others are in when it starts.  Icons are not usually stored as
separate .ico files but rather within programs.  If you are creating
your own icons, you may wish to set it up so they are all in one folder
too, so you can scroll thru all of them at one sitting.

Thanks.......but it generally opens to a DLL file....which would be tricky to
edit (adding a folder full of icons). If I browse it goes to system 32 Type:
Icon Files. I suppose I could put the folder there but how to default the
type file to 'all files?'

lol, yeah, I wouldn't want to try to edit a DLL for that<g>!
Actually, what I should have said was to create your own DLL file for
..ico files to contain the icons you have created or separated out or
whatever.  I named mine simply _1Micons.dll and put it into the same
folder.  The "_1" simply puts it at the top of the alpha folder listing
for easy locating.  It could just as easily be X.dll or whatever.  Or
even just put your own folder in that same folder it always opens to for
you (system32).  At least it'd always be easy to click to.
I'm not sure I understand why you would want to see "All files" and
don't have any ideas on how to automagically change the filespec offhand
when Change Icon is triggered.

Anyway, that's about all I can think of to offer.

Cheers,

Twayne

Thanks.....

The icon files I have can only be open as 'all files.' They are icl files.
The process of changing an icon requires 6 or 7 steps as things are set up
now. That's why I want to find a way to speed it up. How do you create a DLL
file and get my icl files in them?

Ahh, .icl files; library files.  Now I think I understand, though I'm no
expert by any means in this area.  All I know is what little bits I've
used because I needed them as opposed to learning much about the nuances
and details.

There are a lot of freebie apps that will create DLLs for you.  I used
iconview  last time I fiddled with them and the resulting DLLs worked
just fine. There are also some programs that claim to be able to add
icons to existing DLLs but I never had much luck with them.    You might
have some luck at:
http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?Category=Icon+Tools
too.  There are also some programs like:

ICL-Icon Extractor
ArtIcons
ArtIcons Pro
IconX
aiconnnn where nnn = the rev; mine is 115 and probably old by now.
exico
ICO FX
Liquid Icon
etc.
that you might find useful.  AFAIK those are all "safe" and
reasonably reliable apps, but I haven't played much with them in a year
or so; if anything I'd expect them to have improved some.  Use Google to
locate sources for them; they're all over the place.

There is a huge number of similar apps on the net as well, all free,
but since I'm not actively using anything at the moment, it's hard to
recommend anything beyond those above.
Be sure to scan them for viruses etc. if you download any of  them.

I'll be honest though, unless you have a gazillion icons you need to
organize, I found it more useful to just create another folder in
Ssytem32 and put my .ico files in there.  That way I had a ready way to
see them all without having to open a DLL and go thru the process of
calling them by number etc..  My suggestion would be to experiment
around a bit and see what works best for you.  And remember, once you
get it working, to treat them as part of the OS or you'll forget to
bring them along if you change machines, lose a drive, etc..

HTH,

Twayne
