You should try to describe your problem in words, since most people who
answer questions in this group (including me) will only read plain text.

On the basis of what you wrote in the Subject line, I'm going to guess
that you're asking about the My Places Bar.

"How to customize the My Places bar in both the Open and the Save As
dialog boxes in Office"

Sorry if I guessed wrong.

Sorry,

Thanks for answering though. I find that the area I was talking about is
called the "My Places" and both the answers here were of great help. Would
be nice it the My places could handle more than 5 in non-office apps.

Anyway thanks again.

I'm not sure if the maximum of 5 applies everywhere. For example, I've
added more than 5 to File Open boxes, but you have to scroll to get to
all the icons.

That area of the Save in dialog is called the Places bar. You
can't have any more than 5 places in that bar, but you can
change each of the default locations. The easiest way to do
this is with a program available from Microsoft called TweakUI.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the plus sign next to Common Dialogs and click on Places
Bar.
In the right hand pane, select Custom places bar.
You can now change any or all of the 5 default places to ones
of your choosing.

Here are a couple of articles with more info.

Edit the Places bar locations in 'Open/Save As' common dialog
boxes

Keep in mind that Microsoft Office maintains its own common
places dialog. According to what I've read the limit there is
256 places.

Good luck
