Ajay.
After installing updates for my Win XP Professional I found that I have got
Desktop search panel on my taskbar. I tried to remove it using add-remove
program but there is no entry there. I also tried to block it using msconfig,
but no use...

Can anyone help me in getting rid of this desktop search which neither like
nor use.

I tried to contact technical support of microsoft through email, but got
message that i need paid support to contact them :-(

Its strange to know that i need to pay microsoft for removing a piece of
software which they have installed it on my machine without my permission...

Please help me.

Thanks in advance.

-Ajay.

After you remove it, it will come back with your next batch pf updates -
you will need to choose "custom" install and uncheck it, then tell it not
to ask you again.

Does the desktop search thing actually do anything useful?  On my system,
it would only find a very few files even if I searched for filenames or
contents that I knew there were lots of that should match.  And I already
knew where my files were, anyway.

Probably it hasn't indexed many files yet.  So far, mine does very little -
I think it is because it has indexed so few files.  Once all the files have
been indexed (which it does when your computer is idle, and might take days)
you can probably do a very powerful search,  just like Google Desktop.

Thank you Gordon.  What I would REALLY like, though is to be able to set a
preference that the old search tool (called "Search Companion") be my default
search, but that desktop search be available if I want it.  Sadly, that
doesn't seem possible.

Or is it, and I am missing something?

That worked great, but how do I get the old "search" back?
