somebody please help me

my default window size has now gone ridiculously small,
I'm running a 17"widescreen laptop display at 1920x1200

how do i go about changing the size? (ideally for every window i open)

here is a link to a screenshot of the situation
(the image is hosted by photobucket and is totally safe) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j245/creativeapprentice/default_window_opening_size.jpg

(last note the only modding programs i am using are stylexp[for visual
style], iconpackager[for icons], stardock objectdock[for a hidden dock at
bottom of screen] and micorsoft's Tweak UI[to increase thumbnail size]
! none of these affect the default window size)

thankyou - please help this is really annoying

Are you comfortable working with Regedit?  I don't want to type a bunch of
instructions only to have you come back & tell me it's too complicated :)

Start with my FolderViewMaster script

It applies all the view customizations you can set to all of a folder's
subfolders.  Right-click the link below & save to your computer.  The zip
file contains a readme file & the script itself.

http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip

Say 'No' when prompted to delete all saved views, say 'Yes' to prompting on
a per-folder basis.  When prompted to select a folder, select the Desktop.
Set the window that opens to your desired size & position and complete
execution of the script.

In the folder where you unzipped the script, there will be a unique
subfolder named YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.  There should be two .reg files --
'undo.reg' and 'Folder Template-Desktop-Bag##.reg'.  Take note of the Bag
number.

Open regedit & navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\##\Shell\Inherit]

Delete all values but the following:    (names vary based on screen
resolution)

"MinPos1024x768(1).x"=dword:ffffffff
"MinPos1024x768(1).y"=dword:ffffffff
"MaxPos1024x768(1).x"=dword:ffffffff
"MaxPos1024x768(1).y"=dword:ffffffff
"WinPos1024x768(1).left"=dword:00000016
"WinPos1024x768(1).top"=dword:0000001c
"WinPos1024x768(1).right"=dword:00000176
"WinPos1024x768(1).bottom"=dword:000001fe
"WFlags"=dword:00000000
"ShowCmd"=dword:00000001
"FFlags"=dword:00000000

Keith,

I, too, have been looking for a reg hack to control window size and location
and so far your thread shows the most promise.

I am the administrator for the school district with over 38 schools.  What I
am trying to do is to have a window on the Desktop called Applications that
is locked in size and position.  Inside this window we can place the icons
the elementary students are to use.  My question to you is this; can we use
your reg hack to lock this window?  Even if the kids can move or resize the
window when they are in I would like it to reappear in the specified location
(and size) after a reboot or login.  Is this possible?  I am hoping to push
this down via GPO so I would not have to physically visit every PC in the
district.

So far we are able to automatically create and re-create the Applications
folder and populate it with the icons we need via GPOs, we would just like to
be able to control the size and location if possible.

Thank you for your time,

Ilmar

Have you tried:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

Position and size that window.
Logoff.
Logon.
Change "NoSaveSettings" to 1

Thanx a lot!!  It works just as we wanted it to.  I tested it as a student by
resizing it and moving it.  After logging back in the windows opens right
where it should be.  I even deleted the folder, reboot, re-created the folder
with the same name and it still opened as we wanted it to.

Once again "Thank you."  This will be a big help.

Is there a way to make this apply to all users?  Currently this works well
but only to the user account that set it up.

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER" is an alias for
"HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-<currently-logged-in-user>".

I have no expertize in dealing with multiple user accounts
on a single machine, and certainly not in a networked environment.
However, the following GENERAL information may help. (I no longer
have access to your original post, so any references to networking
might be irrelevant.)

In order to get "the necessary registry settings" into EVERY user account
you would need to run script(s). "The Scripting Guys" over at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/resources/qanda/default.mspx
accept scripting queries via eMail. The "vbs" newsgroup may also help.

"The necessary registry settings" for each user would include
"NoSaveSettings" plus all the settings for all wanted folders
(position, size, folder-tree, icons or thumbnais or details or ...,
if details view: which columns, sort order, ...).
These settings are stored in
HKEY_USERS\<user>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
and in
HKEY_USERS\<user>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
on my single user account on my standalone machine.

On a networked machine, settings may also/instead be stored in
HKEY_USERS\<user>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
and in
HKEY_USERS\<user>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

It you put "the necessary registry settings" into
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\, hopefully, every NEW user account will have
"NoSaveSettings" = 1 plus all the folder settings in
ShellNoRoam\Bag(MRU|s).
If this works, you might be able to then delete all existing user
accounts. (Do not delete the Administrator account.)

How to get the folder settings in ShellNoRoam\Bag(MRU|s):

1. Logon

2. Set "NoSaveSettings" to 0

3. Delete the following two keys (to start with a clean slate):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

4. Position, size, ... all explorer windows

5. Export the following key to ShellNoRoam.reg:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

6. Open ShellNoRoam.reg in a text editor

7. In ShellNoRoam.reg, delete everything NOT applicable to
ShellNoRoam\BagMRU and ShellNoRoam\Bags

8. In ShellNoRoam.reg, replace all occurrences of
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER" with "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT"

9. Add the following two lines to ShellNoRoam.reg:
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000001

10. Save this file and merge it onto ONE machine.
If every NEW user has that folder "how and where" YOU want it,
you now have "the necessary registry settings" that need to be
applied to all users on all machines.
If you must retain existing user accounts, good luck with
enumerating all the "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-..." keys.
(Do not delete the Administrator account.)
