Networking Between XP and 2000Hello,
I am currently in quite a pickle. I am trying to set up a home network between my two desktop computers. I made a disk using the XP step by step way but it didnt work because it says it doesnt work on 2000. I will give you some background, 1st computer is Windows 2000 Pro and 2nd computer is Windows XP Pro. I simply want to be able to print from 2nd computer (printer is connected to 2000 pro computer) and I want to make a shard folder to back up stuff from 2nd computer. I have a wired router (D-Link DI-604). The printer in question is a hp deskjet 920c. Any help would be appreciated (prefebly step by step ). Oh ya the broadband thing that has blincking lights is a RCA. Also I went to network places and found my second computer but whenever I click it it says "Computer Name" is not accessable. The network path was not found. Thanks, Moxxon On both computer:
- logon with the same username and password on both computers 1. open the Local Area Connetion Properties (on XP - Start, Network Connections, right click Local Area Connection, select Properties) 2. make sure there is a check mark beside Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks 3. click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 4. click Properties 5. select the "Obtain an IP address automatically" radio button 6. select the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" radio button 7. click Advanced... 8. select the WINS tab 9. select the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" radio button 10. click OK; click OK; click Close; If you have Windows XP SP2 do steps 11 through 16; otherwise skip to step 17. 11. on the Local Area Connection's Properties page, select the Advanced tab 12. click Settings... 13. on the General tab, if the Off radio button is selected the Windows Firewall is disabled - while this means the Firewall will not interfere with your networking, it does mean that protection afforded by the Firewall is turned off - skip to step 17 14. if the On radio button is selected, make sure there is no check mark in "Don't all exceptions" 15. select the Exceptions tab 16. make sure there is a check mark beside "File and Print Sharing"; click OK 17. create a folder share 18. click Start, Run 19. key \\computername (name of the other computer); Press Enter You should get a Windows Explorer window showing the shares available on the other computer and be able to view the contents of the shared folder. You should also be able to drill down through My Network Places, Entire Network etc., but I find that tedious. The Start, Run dialog remembers what you have keyed, so its simple to select the \\computername entry if you need to later. Until you get file/folder sharing working, there is little point pursuing printer sharing. If file/folder sharing works, but you can't get the printer sharing to work and the information below doesn't help, I suggest posting in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax newsgroup. You may find that the printer driver on the Windows 2000 computer is for "NT 4 and Windows 2000". This driver quite likely won't work on Windows XP. resolved all the issues I set up a separate network connection at 2000 Pro as "Incoming Connections" through the com1 port. After resetting the sharing for the files and printer I am able to access everything in the Win2000 Pro from the Win XP Pro but not vice-versa. Hope it helps. >-----Original Message----- XP step by step way >Hello, > >I am currently in quite a pickle. I am trying to set up a home network >between my two desktop computers.
