Does an Add-On exist for Remote Desktop for Win2000->WinXP or WinXP->Win2000 ?

As far as I know the Remote Desktop feature is only built-in in WinXP.
But can I add the Remote Desktop feature/tool for Windows 2000 as well
(either as a client or as a server)?
Where can I download it?

To install Remote Desktop Connection (32-bit computers)
On the computer running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 or Windows
2000, insert the Windows XP Professional compact disc into your CD-ROM
drive.
When the Welcome page appears, click Perform additional tasks, and then
click Set up Remote Desktop Connection.

You can download the most current Remote Desktop Client that runs on W2K from...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8255ffc-4b4a-40e7-a706-cde7e9b57e79&DisplayLang=en

You might look at using UltraVNC to access the W2K box from XP clients...Its quite fast, at least on
an XP box, if you include the optional video driver...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

Note that you can run both through a SSH tunnel for added security over the public internet.

Not as a "server",..client only.

The Terminal Services Client of Windows 2000 used to connect to Terminal
Services back before XP or Server2003 came out is compatible with it and
will work, but you can also download the RD client as well.

yes, the client runs on any flavour of Win2o00, the server is only
available with server versions of the o/s so far as I know.

Lars,

Remote Desktop is actually "Terminal Services" in "Administration
Mode".  This is present on Windows 2000 Server (NOT Pro), WinXP (not
Home), Windows 2003.

For those that don't have Terminal Services or Remote Desktop, VNC
should work splendidly!

Good Luck, HTH

and 2000 server as well. It's just called "terminal services" on that
platform.

It's on the MS website - you just need to search for it.

Windows 2000 Server can use Terminal Services in Remote Administration
mode.  Windows 2000 Professional does not have that capability.  You
can install the RDP client on anything (www.microsoft.com/rdp).
Windows Server 2003 also has TS capabilities but you don't have to
install TS, you only need to enable RDP just like you do in XP, under
System Properties.  Dig?

You can install the CLIENT on older windows, get it here:

Download Remote Desktop Connection Software (Allows Older Windows to
Connect with Windows XP)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

(or go to microsoft.com and search for
"remote desktop",client)

I don't know about running the server on older windows.
I wouldn't think so since it needs terminal services under it to run.

Unfortunately not (at least for Win2K Pro).  However, Windows 2000
Server does have Terminal Services in Remote Administration mode,
which acts much like Remote Desktop.

Just as an addition to my last post, you could use a tool like VNC
(UltraVNC - ultravnc.sourceforge.net) which will give you similar but
somewhat reduced functionality.

If remote desktop is microsofts name for VNC like I think it is,

Lars,

I posted this yesterday....but it didn't show up!

In any case, "remote desktop" is actually included with Windows 200
server, but it is called "Terminal Services in Administration Mode".

Add a new Windows Component, select Terminal Services.  When the
install continues, it will pop up and as you if you want
"Administration Mode, or Application Server mode.  You want the former.

It will support 2 simultaneous connections to the desktop (console is
counted as one if it is logged in).

Remote Desktop is NOT available in Win2000 Pro.

Remote Desktop CLIENT can be used on any version of Windows (Allows you to
connect to a host) -- A quick search of the Microsoft web page brought this
up:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

The host application comes with (in this case) Windows 2000 SERVER versions,
Windows XP Professional and Windows 2003 SERVER versions.  If you want
remote capabilities on a different version of Windows - get "UltraVNC"
(ultravnc.sourceforge.net).

Try this one for windows 2000/XP as a client:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80111F21-D48D-426E-96C2-08AA2BD23A49&displaylang=en

Besides, Windows 2000 professional can not act as a Terminal Server.
Windows 2000 Server can.

I use Radmin, it lets me sit at my XP Pro computer, or any other
computer, from 98SE to Me, to 2k to XP any version, and log into ANY
other computer on my network. I can then manipulate their computer
just like I was sitting in front of it. I do have to run a version of
the program in the background on each computer, but for me that is not
an issue.
I currently have 19 computers on my home network.
