The W2K machine can see the Vista machine in the Workgroup, but the Vista machine can't even see the W2K machine, let alone try to access any of its shares. O/S incompatability? I know this is not very helpful, but after 3 weeks of wasted time and effort,
I returned the new Dell computer to Sam's Club where I bought it and they took it back, no questions asked. Vista was a nightmare, the problems with my W2K computers was not the only one. As I read in "help" I could install W2K on the new machine. But after I did, there were no drivers so I could not access my LAN or even the Internet. When my husband saw me in tears of frustration, he finally convinced me that we should take the computer back. I don't like to give up, but 3 weeks of my time, and backing things up to empty DVD's (because Vista hides files, as I found out later), and on and on and on....I gave up. If you try to install W2K, make sure you have access to the new drivers you will need....if they exist. Check the W2K machine to see if it has a firewall program that's blocking access from Vista. Can Vista ping the W2k machine by IP address and by computer name? How are you trying to see W2K from Vista? What exactly happens when you do it.? -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
