Removing hover label balloons over taskbar icons

I refer to Windows XP Home, SP3.

When I mouse (hover) over a taskbar icon, I get a hover labelhover label
balloon that explains what the icon represent. For example, when I hover over
the lower-case letter "e" that has a ring around it, I get a hover label
balloon with the words, "Internet Explorer".  How do I stop these hover label
ballons from appearing?

I point out that I am not referring to the notification bubbles that
sometimes appear in the notification area by the sys tray.

Thank you.

You could look at :
http://www.theeldergeek.com/tool_tip_displays.htm

But remember always backup your registry before fooling around in there.

Hi TaurArian,
I looked at the link you posted - Yes!  That's the
setting I was looking for that disables ALL balloon tips.  It eluded me.  I
know I remembered having seen it somewhere before.  Still, I don't think
it's what the OP wanted - he wants to be able to still see tips for
notification area icons, and I don't think it's possible to turn them off
for just the quick launch icons...

Hi Tim, this was the other one that I located in my old notes -
How Do I Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_disable_notification_ar.htm

The OP may have to live with the Quick Launch area balloons unless there's a
tweak on Kelly's site.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
There's one on line 11 but it may not be what the OP wants either.

Hi Mitch,
I'm pretty sure you can't turn off balloon tips for quick
launch items without turning them off for everything but, maybe I'm wrong
about that.  Al that I'm aware of is 1). being able to turn the balloon tips
off DESKTOP ITEMS only by going to "Folder Options" in Explorer on
Tools menu and going to the "View" tab and it's the second to last one on
the list "Show pop-up description for desktop items"  and  2). being able
to turn off tooltips (balloon tips) for the NOTIFICATION AREA items
only (what you didn't want) by opening regedit and going to the key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
and create a new dword value named  EnableBalloonTips  and give it a value
0 (zero).

....and 3). being able to turn off the START BUTTON (click here to begin)
balloon only by going to regedit again and under the same key as above,
create a
new dword entry and give it the name  StartButtonBalloonTip  and vale 0
(zero).

Log off and back on to refresh settings.

Sorry if this just 'misses' what you wanted, but there it is (as far as I'm
aware).

Of course they can. See Taur...' s response for one way to do it.

Too many people in this group "don't think" anymore - it's part of
what's wrong with the group. When one doesn't have the answer, they
should jsut move on not waste time & ether with but ... and me too ...
or ... and I know this though... .  A little netiquette wouldn't hurt
most people either.

You are saying that you can turn off tool tips for the items in the QUICK
LAUNCH AREA ONLY and by doing so NOT turn off tool tips for the items in the
Notification Area - that's what you're saying is it?  I don't think so.
