In July you gave this advice to Cher Bear.  I have the same problem since
reformatting.  I have the folder "Default Pictures".  I am using the Welcome
Screen where the correct image is displayed by the user accounts.  However at
the top of the Start Menu it is the "user account" name instead.

I do not have the reg key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
NoUserNameInStartMenu

Change NoUserNameInStartMenu to 0.

Can you please be more specific as to how the key should be added correctly?

Thx in advance.

Switch to the XP Start Menu.

*And* you cannot have a picture if you have the Welcome Screen turned off.
The Start Menu and Welcome Screen use the same picture.

To turn the Welcome screen on...
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
Select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
Click the Apply Options button

Does this folder exist?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures\Default Pictures

Does this registry entry exist? And is NoUserNameInStartMenu set to 1?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
NoUserNameInStartMenu

Change NoUserNameInStartMenu to 0.

Jany,

Which theme are you using? The User account image is not displayed if:

1. Welcome Screen is disabled, or
2. You're not using the Windows XP Theme.

Hi Ramesh,

Well darn it! You're absolutely right :).  I am using the Welcome Screen
(fast switch etc etc).  However the theme was Windows Classic.  I guess I
changed desktops right after loading XP without even thinking about it.
Anyway as soon as I selected XP from the "theme" option, the Start Menu
displayed an image instead.
I've used XP since the first release and never had that happen.

Thanks for your help!

This makes me wonder whether or not I can use my own picture for the
thumbnail at the top of the panel popping up once hitting the START
button....
